Vicuna Bolt 1.45cms x 3.1 M 450gsm Heavy Coat/Suit Fabric Rich Chocolate Brown

Extremely rare pure Vicuna cloth. Dubbed the most expensive natural cloth in the world or'gold of the Andes'. In a rich chocolate brown colour. Vicuna fabric is highly prized and there is a strong plan of sustainibility for the Vicuna animal which was nearly hunted to extinction for it's coat. The Vicuna are incredibly shy animals and only the local people can get close enough to build a relationship with the Vicuna to obtain the coat by shearing. This fabric is in wonderful unused and very well stored condition. It is enough to make a mid length coat or long jacket, several stoles/scarfs, or possibly a two piece suit with a short jacket. This piece listed weighs approx 1.6kg and measures approx 145cm by approx 3.1 meters. The fabric is 450gsm and is a heavy weight coat or suiting fabric.

I initially posted pictures of this fabric in the vintage fashion guild after first purchasing it in April 21 for more information. I wondered if it was a super fine cashmere or cashmere blend with something super soft (I had never felt Vicuna before now). I was advised from verified VFG member that it was possibly Vicuna cloth. I then visited Johnstons of Elgin's London store (they were most helpful) in order to verify by sight and touch.

I also visited Loro Piana where the manager (who is an expert in Vicuna) immediately positively identified it as Vicuna and was very excited to tell me all about it, which was fascinating! I do not have certificates (which is usual with modern pieces of this fabric) and neither of the large pieces have any distinguishing print or information written on the fabrics or anything accompanying. The roll of linen fabric with this was dated 1998. As this cloth does not bear any markings and it is a slightly narrower width than modern Vicuna, I have dated it to the late 90's-early 00's.
